Surprise 🎉

You can now plan, schedule and publish Substack Notes through Buffer!

Try it out →

When we first moved the Weekly Scroll to Substack, Notes felt like a black hole to me. I wasn’t sure what to post, what would be received well, and when to post.

It’s all still so new here that a lot of the conventional advice I’ve found helpful for other social platforms wouldn’t apply just yet.

But you need Notes to find community and grow on Substack, so I had to firm it and push through, starting with 30 Days of Notes.

I’ll be posting Notes every single day for the whole of September. I wrote about why and also shared some interesting analysis results of the Substack algorithm in this week’s issue of The Weekly Scroll. Read it here ⤵️

So you can imagine how serendipitous it was when the Substack team gave our team access to add Notes to Buffer a few days after I decided to take on the challenge.

I’ve been testing the feature by publishing Notes through Buffer for the past few weeks, taking my ideas, turning them into drafts, and publishing.

It has significantly reduced the cognitive load of switching between the Substack app and wherever I’d put down an idea.

I’d love to invite you all to give it a try.

WHAT’S IN MY SCROLL

Sometimes, it’s okay to be self-referential. Here’s all the material I’ve worked on (so far) ahead of this new feature in Buffer. I hope you find my findings useful!

I’m familiar with social media. I’m familiar with newsletters. But after a few months of getting this Substack up and running, I’ve come to accept that I’m not quite sure what to do with something that combines both of these things.

When I put a bunch of effort into the early process of figuring out how to tackle a challenge, I’m always tempted to stick with my initial findings and then bring it all together at the end (my research and results).

🔎 Lessons from how other brands approach Substack

After we decided to move The Weekly Scroll to Substack, I knew we’d need to understand platform norms before committing to a voice of our own, so I dove into research on other brand newsletters on Substack. They ran the gamut, from very industry-focused to the more personal to ones reminiscent of magazines.

That’s all for now!
