Our co-founder on climbing Rainier, our next vintage watch drop, a new episode of DIRT, and more…

Hey there,

Earlier this year, to celebrate Huckberry’s 15th anniversary, my co-founder Richard and I summited Mt. Rainier, a goal of his since childhood. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. 

A 36-hour climb in subzero temperatures and 60-mile-per-hour crosswinds. 30 of those hours in crampons, head down, ice axe in hand, in total darkness, concentrated on landing my next step. You can’t see much in Category 4 glacier glasses, but take them off, and you’ll go snow blind.

It was grueling but meditative, too. The mountain gave me a new maxim, along with mild frostbite and two sore-ass feet: Focus on what’s in front of you. Up there, that’s all you can do; otherwise, it’s a 14,399-foot fall back down to Earth.

Arriving back in Austin, I was exhausted but energized,
glad to be out of crampons, and primed to put the precept
I found atop Rainier into practice. What we’ve been busy building since is finally coming into view.

And, before the year ends, plan a visit to one of our
stores in Chicago, Georgetown, or the newly opened San Francisco. I'll be dropping by over the
 next two months and hope to see you there.
