The momentum of open-weight models (e.g., Moonshot, Deepseek, Z.Ai, etc.) is high right now. The data supports this, as do the conversations I’m having with founders. Take a look at the images below. Closed-weight models (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, Gemini) are still the leaders when it comes to spending, but they are facing serious challenges, and the question is whether they can hold off the competition.
The days of tokenmaxxing on closed models are over; it was a great way to get developers and employees engaged with AI from 2025 through 2026, but finance teams have had enough. As finance leaders head into 2027 planning, token costs are under scrutiny. The bullish case for closed models is that there are still many companies and industries that haven’t adopted AI yet, so the total addressable market is growing, and closed-weight models are easier to adopt if you are not technical.
