DICK'S Sporting Goods began in 1948 when 18-year-old Dick Stack, working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York, was dismissed by his boss as a "dumb kid" after suggesting fishing tackle products. He quit, and his grandmother gave him $300 from her life savings, telling him to open his own store. Dick used the money to launch a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton, later expanding his product line by the late 1970s into the broader sporting goods offerings the store carries today.
