A short stress spike during a hard effort is exactly what should happen. It’s part of what makes a hard session so effective. But when your stress levels don’t come back down between training sessions, that’s a problem. Elevated cortisol as a baseline can blunt recovery, disrupt sleep, and turn training into grinding instead of building.

Here’s what actually helps, and why.

Daily Destressers

SwissRX Calm uses 100mg of pharmaceutical-grade phosphatidylserine, a compound shown in double-blind research to blunt the cortisol spike that follows intense exercise. Take one softgel post-workout when cortisol is highest, and one in the evening if stress or sleep disruption is an issue.

Thorne Stress Balance takes a broader approach, with six adaptogens (ashwagandha, Asian ginseng, eleuthero, astragalus, ginger, licorice) working through different pathways. Plus a high dose of vitamin C, which matters more than people realize. Consistency matters most here. Adaptogens build their effect with regular use rather than working from a single dose.

Post-Workout

KA-EX Cortisol Stress Reducer is also phosphatidylserine-based, and has been shown to normalize cortisol 36% faster post-workout, making it a strong fit for right after a hard session. Mix one sachet in 12oz of water after training.

Before Big Stressors

Arrae Calm centers on L-theanine, clinically studied to reduce cortisol while increasing alpha brain wave activity. Think, “relaxed but still alert”. Take it ahead of a race, a big presentation, or whatever’s creating mental noise that day.

All Day, Every Day

Headstrong Mushroom Blend Gummies lean on reishi specifically, whose triterpenes help moderate the cortisol response after hard training. Lion’s mane and cordyceps work on focus and energy in parallel, useful for the mental grind of long training cycles. Two gummies a day keeps the stress away.

Nighttime Routine

Nokt Sleep Gummies close the loop at night. Ashwagandha actively lowers cortisol so the body can shift into recovery mode. Meanwhile, plant-derived phytomelatonin reinforces the natural sleep signal that elevated cortisol tends to interfere with. Since deep sleep is when muscle repair, glycogen replenishment, and hormonal recovery all happen, you must protect it at all costs. Take 1-2 gummies 30-60 minutes before bed.

Managing training stress isn’t about eliminating cortisol. It’s about controlling it.
