You Hit Your Goal. Why Didn't It Feel Like Enough?

Money, status, and looks rarely deliver the payoff you expect. A study on the life you plan and a 70,000-person analysis show which goals lift well-being.

Supplemental DHA Reaches Your Brain. But Then Memory Didn’t Change

Fish oil’s brain-health promise rests on a simple idea: DHA is an important part of the brain, so getting more of it into the brain should help protect memory.

Researchers had limited evidence about how much DHA reached the brain and what impact it had. A new two-year trial offered some new data.

After two years, people taking DHA had far more of it in their blood and the fluid surrounding the brain. However, their memory, thinking scores, and brain scans were no better than those taking a placebo.

Researchers examined participants between 55 and 80 who ate very little omega-3 and had at least one risk factor for dementia. Nearly half carried APOE4, the gene variant associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer’s. Participants took either 2 grams of DHA per day or a placebo.

The DHA marker rose in the supplement group and dipped in the placebo group. Blood omega-3 levels increased from about 5 percent to 11 percent, so absorption wasn’t the problem.

But the groups showed no difference in memory or other measures of thinking. Brain volume didn’t differ either.

One explanation for disappointing omega-3 trials has been that too little DHA reaches the brain. In this study, researchers still found no cognitive benefit over two years. At the same time, it’s just one study, and more research is needed to better understand the relationships between supplemental DHA and cognition.

This does not make fish oil useless. Omega-3s can lower triglycerides, with a couple of grams per day reducing levels by around 15 percent. They may also ease joint stiffness in people with rheumatoid arthritis and offer a modest benefit for mood.

Eating fish a couple of times per week is associated with fewer cardiac deaths, although the clearest benefit from supplements appears in people who already have high triglycerides.

So keep eating healthy fats and fatty fish. But if you’re taking a high-dose capsule as memory insurance, this study suggests there’s more for us to learn before we can feel confident that it helps.

The Blind Spot Most People Never Check

Most threats to your health don't send a warning. Cholesterol creeps up without a symptom. Blood pressure climbs while you feel completely fine.

That's why the smartest health habits aren't always about fixing things. They're about seeing things clearly.

A blood panel shows you what's happening inside your body. A nutrition tracker turns "I eat pretty well" into food clarity. A blood pressure reading catches the stress you stopped noticing months ago. None of them fix anything on their own. They just remove the blind spot.

If you can see your blind spots and prepare for them, you're far less likely to get blindsided.
