Fleece’s story starts in the 1970s, when designers and climbers, fed up with heavy wool insulators, sought a synthetic alternative that was lighter, more weather-resistant, and easier to move in. An early prototype repurposed a bolt of polyester pile fabric intended for toilet seat covers. After a bit of trial and error, the adaptation proved successful, but its creators declined to patent it, intentionally letting everyone else in on their invention. Now, five decades later, fleeces are an essential part of any cold-weather kit. Inspired by those early, inventive pullovers, our bestselling Tahr Fleece Jacket uses a custom waffle pile our product team developed to deliver reliable warmth without added weight.
