OLIVER CHALK - FOUND WOOD
This month's Workshop Wisdom is Oliver Chalk, the maker behind Found Wood.
Oliver works with reclaimed and found timber, making one body of work each year. The process is slow and deliberate; sourcing the material, finding form on the lathe, carving, drying, and finally deciding which works are worth refining and which are not. Each collection becomes the starting point for the next.
A main theme running through his work is surface; the way we instinctively reach out and touch things to understand them, often without realising we're doing it. The final pieces are, as he describes them, the residue of time spent with the material.
